The Department of Defence has embarked on a transformative journey to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. WideSky (formerly VRT Systems), in collaboration with Citect and EDMI, delivered the first phase of the Regional Utilities Management system (RUMS) across South Queensland bases.

This initiative was the cornerstone of Defence’s commitment to sustainability.

The Challenge:

The Department of Defence is responsible for 54% of the Federal Government’s energy usage, making it a key player in Australia’s environmental efforts.

The challenge was to:

  1. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in alignment with Australia’s Kyoto Protocol commitments.
  2. Optimize energy management across major Defence sites.
  3. Create a scalable solution that could extend to other Defence Force bases.

The South Queensland region, accounting for 10% of Defence energy usage, was identified as the ideal starting point for this ambitious project.

Our Solution:

We delivered a tailored energy management solution integrating advanced metering, SCADA systems, and data analytics to provide complete visibility and control.  The system integrates and augments existing BMS and load control systems.

Key features include:

  • Smart Metering: Installation of EDMI Genius Mark6 meters across substations at Enoggera, Amberley, and Oakey.
  • Centralized Monitoring: Citect-Facilities SCADA software for real-time data acquisition, load control, and alerts.
  • Data-Driven Insights: SQL-powered analytics for energy accounting, tariff management, and greenhouse gas reporting.

The system is accessible via an intuitive intranet, empowering local and central energy managers to make informed decisions.

Results:

The RUMS project is already delivering measurable benefits:

  • Baseline Performance Metrics: Establishing a clear starting point for energy efficiency.
  • Greenhouse Gas Reductions: Targeting annual reductions of 1,200 tonnes of CO2.
  • Cost Savings: Significant operational and energy cost reductions.
  • Scalable Architecture: Designed to integrate additional utilities and expand to new sites.
