The Challenge:
Barangaroo South in Sydney’s CBD is the city’s largest urban renewal project since the 2000 Olympics, and is slated to become Australia’s first large-scale, carbon-neutral community.
The challenge at Barangaroo South centered around managing a complex, multi-utility infrastructure while achieving ambitious sustainability goals. As Australia’s first large-scale carbon-neutral community, the precinct required seamless coordination of its private and traditional utility services to maintain high environmental standards.
Lendlease’s Living Utilities was established to enhance the delivery and management of energy, water, and waste systems across the site. However, with a recycled water plant, centralized chilled water plant, embedded electrical network, solar energy investments, and fiber solutions, managing real-time performance, data accuracy, and tenant billing became increasingly complex.
Additionally, as one of only 18 global projects in the C40 Cities Climate Positive Development Program, Barangaroo South had to achieve net-negative emissions while ensuring transparent reporting on energy use and sustainability metrics. The need for real-time monitoring, accurate data tracking, and operational efficiency was critical to supporting its ambitious carbon-neutral and water net-positive objectives.

This granular data also supports ongoing analysis of thermal energy usage to optimize air conditioning efficiency.
